The first long-distance national greenway in northern Taiwan, the “Dan-Lan Century-old Trail,” spans through Taipei City, New Taipei City, Keelung, and Yilan. Two of the classic trails, the Caoling Historic Trail and the Paoma Historic Trail, are well-known outing destinations for the people of Taiwan that combines experiencing mountains, environmental education, cultural trips and eco-tourism. These trails are the first choices for rejuvenating the tourism industry after the pandemic. In addition, the Asia Trails Conference will be hosted in Taiwan next year and with the mutual consensus between the government and the people, the beauty of Taiwan’s trails will be seen by the entire world.

On September 8th, with Minister of Transportation Chia-lung Lin, members of the Taipei City, New Taipei City, Keelung and Yilan City Governments, and the Executive Yuan’s SWCB, Tourism Bureau Director-General Hsi-tsung Chang and Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association (TTMTA) Chairman Chang-yi Chang jointly signed a Memorandum of Public-Private Cooperation on the International Promotion of Dan-Lan Century-old Trail.
Century-old Mountain Trail and National Greenway, a first choice for domestic tourism
The Dan-Lan Century-old Mountain Trail is a long-distance trail, and one of the three national greenways approved by the Executive Yuan for priority promotion in 2018. With a proposal initiated by the TTMTA in 2015 and during every Taiwan Trail Day since 2016, eight local ministerial leaders have conducted meetings and treks every year. So far after 16 Dan-Lan platform meetings and public-private joint efforts to build and promote the Trail, it has become Northern Taiwan’s first long-distance national greenway.
The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications also expressed their hopes that the TTMTA, which has already joined international organizations such as the Asia Trails Network and World Trails Network in 2017, will continue to help integrate many classic trails into the Dan-Lan Century-old Mountain Trail such as the that in the future, it will help to match the classic routes of Danlan Road, such as the Caoling Historic Trail, the Golden Letters Tablet Historic Trail, the Paoma Historic Trail, and the Nuandong Old Trail for exchanges and friendships with other countries around the world.
The TTMTA stated that it will continue to consolidate private and government forces to promote the Dan-Lan National Greenway, which combines the cultural characteristics of northern Taiwan and the spirit of environmental friendliness, to become the brightest beacon during the rejuvenation of the eco-friendly tourism industry in the post-pandemic era.
The public and private sectors have worked hand-in-hand over the past ten years, conducting various surveys and historical research to discover this ancient trail with a national identity that everyone can agree upon. The trail system of the Dan-Lan Trail is the most developed system and suitable for international exchanges. Hopefully the Dan-Lan Trail isn’t just suitable for outings by the local population, but hopefully it can be exhibited internationally to show the unimaginable depth and sophistication of Taiwan. The most beautiful scene in Taiwan is seeing a group of people coming together, and inconspicuously giving and sharing. Looking forward to the following year, Taiwan will not only get to display its achievements in pandemic prevention, but also greenway construction and trail tourism to demonstrate the country’s soft power, once again exhibiting Taiwan to the world and welcoming people from around the world to visit Taiwan and participate in the 2021 Asian Trails Conference.
