The Maria Social Welfare Foundation shared the experiences at the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disability Conference
The Maria Social Welfare Foundation has been promoting the autonomous communication and social participation performance of patients with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. Last year, it attended the “Asian Federation on Mental Retardation” and presented a paper during the conference. Through sharing its practical experience, it allowed the world to understand professional services Taiwan provides on profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, while learning from the experience of others to further improve its broadness of depth of service.
The Asian Federation on Mental Retardation was founded in Manila in 1973 and its conference is held once every 2 years. The Special Education Association of the Republic of China became its official member in 1985, representing our country. A total of 14 countries from Asia are members of this federation.
Maria Social Welfare Foundation presented related research on children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities at the Conference.
Its paper presentation conference accepts related researches on mentally disabled patients from different countries, cultures and different development stages. It also encourages young mentally disabled patients to stand on the international stage to speak out and advocate for themselves. During these paper presentations, participants can understand the different measures of different countries and share experiences with one another.
At the conference, the Maria Social Welfare Foundation was the only presenter that presented related research on children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. On the day of the presentation, it demonstrated the APP of “AAC Communication 50+” to tell attendants about its daily services and the usage situation of the targets, receiving much positive feedback and recognition.
The “AAC Communication 50+” APP by the Maria Social Welfare Foundation is the only Chinese application that could achieve 80% of the communication functions patients with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities require with 50 common phrases. It can assist the communication of serious and profound disabled patients. Just by the assistance, demonstration and scenario response of its communication partners, it could help physical and mental disabled people to express themselves on their own without obstruction.
