Eco-friendly Packaging Circular System Creates Plastic-Reducing Trend in Online Shopping

Shopping through e-commerce platforms has become a trend in Taiwan. However, online shopping has resulted in mass packaging and created many wastes. CEO of PackAge+, Te-Wei Yeh proposed the online shopping packaging circular system concept with the expectation of reducing online shopping packaging consumption.
According to the data of Environmental Protection Administration, online shopping in Taiwan has produced at least 80 million packaging boxes. Packaging used in online shopping actually causes great harm to the environment. If consumers can repeatedly use packaging for online shopping, it can reduce wastes resulted from disposable packaging. Therefore, Yeh started to ponder on how to recycle packaging and planted the seed of its entrepreneurship. On 2019, he founded PackAge+ and gradually comprehended the model of online shopping circular system.

In the concept of PackAge+, packaging that can be repeatedly used will be rented to e-commerce platforms and the latter could use them for shipping. When consumers received their orders, they just have to retrieve what they have bought and return packaging to designated collaborating locations to return them. PackAge+ will then retrieve the packaging and repeatedly hand them over to e-commerce platforms after cleaning and examining them, thus achieving the circulation of online shopping packaging. Although the online shopping packaging circulation system of PackAge+ is not officially online yet, it is now carrying out discussions with e-commerce platforms and collaborating returning locations. It also expects e-commerce platforms or collaborating returning locations to provide some discounts to consumers after they have returned their packaging.
This packaging circular system does more than just reducing the consumption of packaging. To make the system more eco-friendly, its packaging is made from recycled PET bottles. By doing so, not only its materials would not consume extra plastics, this packaging can also be recycled after they can no longer be used, thus making its cost lower than common online shopping wrapping papers. Moreover, there will be a security sticker on the packaging and marks will be left if the sticker was tearing off, ensuring consumers that their orders have not been opened.

Besides creating the online shopping packaging circular system, it also released the eco-friendly public welfare box of “Re-Box” and the eco-friendly recycled tissue paper of “ReTissue.” The eco-friendly public welfare boxes are mainly provided to e-commerce platforms. Not only could they be 100% recycled, it also cooperates with the public welfare organization of “Homeless Taiwan” and the environmental organization of “Formosa County Beauty” by putting their name, introduction and QR code on the boxes to enhance their exposure and help them raise funds for operation.
The eco-friendly recycled tissue paper was released by PackAge+ by cooperating with the INGO of “Trees for the Future.” For every bag of tissue paper sold, it will give a donation to “Trees for the Future” to plant a tree. Moreover, these eco-friendly recycled tissue papers are made with 100% recycled pulp, which effectively utilizes recycled resources.

Given that it is currently under the stage of development, its current goal is hoping that its online shopping packaging circular system could be introduced to more channels and triggers more consumer usage. It also expects that after the enterprise has steadily developed, it could introduce its packaging circular system to other countries and regions besides Taiwan, thus gradually improving the global online shopping packaging waste issue.
