On behalf of Taiwan, Ministry of Education Sports Administration Director General Cheng Shih-chung signed a letter of intent on sports and baseball exchanges with Palau's National Olympic Committee President Frank Kyota on January 16. The signing was witnessed by Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Palau's Tourism Minister Ngirai Tmetuchl. The agreement marked the beginning of a new chapter in sports diplomacy for Taiwan.
Taiwan will establish a new sports ministry this year. One of the agency's four main objectives will be to further promote international affairs and increase Taiwan's worldwide visibility. By developing sports exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and its allies, the ministry will build a network for sports diplomacy and help consolidate Taiwan's diplomatic relations. The policies will enhance Taiwan’s contributions to international sports and raise its global profile.
The letter of intent is a further example of sports diplomacy between Taiwan and Palau, following offsite training for Palau's swimming and archery teams in Taiwan in 2023. The initiative is expected to boost Palau’s competitiveness in baseball and deepen bilateral ties.
