On August 7, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung met with a delegation from Freedom House led by Chief Executive Officer Jamie Fly. The two sides exchanged views on issues including democratic development in Taiwan and internationally, responding to the challenge of authoritarian expansionism, and cooperation on human rights.

In his remarks, Lin welcomed Fly to Taiwan and praised Freedom House for its reports and research on transnational repression and other issues, which had contributed to global freedom and democracy. He said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was planning to establish an international nongovernmental organization center in Taiwan. The center would make Taiwan a key hub for INGOs in the Indo-Pacific region and achieve the aims of integrated diplomacy. Lin added that he looked forward to deepening cooperation with Freedom House and other leading human rights organizations to jointly strengthen democratic resilience.

Fly praised Taiwan’s contributions to democracy and human rights, noting that Freedom House had given Taiwan a high ranking in the latest Freedom in the World report, placing it second only to Japan in Asia. He said that Taiwan was an important model for global democracy, adding that he hoped to develop a closer partnership with Taiwan to promote regional democratic development.
